Before purchasing trike insurance coverage, educate yourself on your state’s insurance requirements. Each state maintains different insurance requirements, but in most cases a trike will require the same auto insurance limits as a motorcycle. Most states mandate motorcycle liability coverage or it’s accepted legal equivalent.
For insurance requirements, check with your local DMV or your state’s insurance department.
Be sure the agent you speak with does not confuse a trike for a motorcycle or a scooter. Otherwise, if there are different insurance requirements, you may either purchase too little or too much coverage.
Find a Motorbike Coverage Provider
Most providers that offer motorbike and motorcycle insurance now offer trike coverage, too. For help in finding a provider, ask other trike owners or trike shop dealers for recommendations.
Before shopping for an insurance company, check with your existing car insurance provider to see if it offers trike protection. If yes, you may qualify for a bundle discount, which is offered to clients who consolidate multiple policies (homeowners, rent, car).
Depending on your provider, you may be offered some or all of the following motorbike coverage options.
- Bodily injury liability.
- Property damage liability.
- Passenger liability.
- Uninsured/Underinsured motorist bodily injury and property damage liability.
- Accessory coverage.
- Safety apparel.
- Rental reimbursement.
- Tow-behind trike trailer coverage.
- Roadside assistance with trip interruption reimbursement.
When shopping, be sure to compare quotes from multiple providers. The more quotes you obtain, the better your chances of finding an insurance policy that meets your budget and best covers your trike.
Find Trike Insurance Discounts
Once you settle on a provider, inquire about possible discounts for:
- Anti-theft devices.
- Safe driving record.
- Anti-lock brakes.
- Safe riding course participation.
- Bundle packages (described above).
