The mission of the Department of Educational Psychology is to promote the development and application of scientific knowledge. To do so, our faculty members are committed to:
- Producing high-quality, innovative research and scholarship
- Providing effective and culturally inclusive instructional technologies to prepare practitioners and researchers to use the tools, resources, and strategies necessary to improve the educational experience of all learners
- Preparing culturally competent scientist-practitioners and researchers to effectively contribute to the applied psychological development and well-being of children and adolescents
- Providing responsive educational and psychological services to the local community, schools, and beyond
- Engaging in participatory and leadership roles in local, national, and international institutions and organizations
Our Academic Programs
This program is designed for students who want to work with children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of academic, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Common roles and functions of the School Psychologist include psychological assessment, counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, research, and program evaluation. School Psychologists work with students, their families, and school staff in order to help students be as successful as possible in school. The program is designed to provide students the academic and practical training necessary to become licensed as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, which is a nationally-recognized professional certification granted by the National Association of School Psychologists.
Graduate certificates are conferred through an educational process, and typically awarded upon completion of required courses. Sponsoring academic units may align required coursework with established professional standards. Certificates may require some demonstration of knowledge acquired through the coursework, such as a project or portfolio.
The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Certificate is designed to meet the needs of current and prospective students interested in developing proficiency in applied behavioral analysis. This certificate focuses on the perspective of educational psychology and special education from learning theory as it relates to applied behavior analysis.

- Research — Faculty and students conduct important research, such as that conducted at the Psychological Assessment and Consultation Center, provides learning opportunities, community service and acts as an avenue for creating new knowledge.

The Language Acquisition and Bilingual Psychoeducational Assessment (LABPA) Certificate is designed to address the needs of prospective students interested in developing skills in bilingual Psychoeducational assessment and foundational knowledge in language acquisition and the bilingual continuum, which an emphasis on Spanish-speaking English Language Learners (ELLs).
** Educational P sychology also provides supportive coursework to other departments and degree programs.
